The Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society’s, Dr.Maalakaraddy, Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital started its humble beginnings in the year 1980 under the benign efforts of Dr. A.B.Malakreddy, the then President of the Society and an avid lover of Homoeopathy. The dream of Dr.Malakreddy was to sow seeds of this two century old system of Medicine in this region of the country i.e. Hyderabad-Karnataka. The institution crawled along, with only a handful of dedicated homoeopathic teachers and a large faculty of M.R.Medical College, a sister concern. Dr. S S Shetty was the first Principal and under his aegis the seeds of the institution Presidents of the Society like; Poojya Sri.Basavarajappa Appa, Sri.Basavaraj Bhimalli and efficient members of the council. The Present President, Sri. Basavraj.S.Bhimalli and his dynamic team of Governing Council gave a Special attention to the college in converting it into a pioneer college in Karnataka. The institution scored many first and also achieved various high points in various fields, at different levels.
H.K.E. Society’s, Dr.Maalakaraddy, Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital is the first institution in the whole of Karnataka state to offer B.H.M.S. Degree Course. The course was offered with affiliation of Court of Examiners in Homoeopathic Education of Karnataka Board of Homoeopathic system of Medicine, Bangalore. The course was started with an initial capacity of 50 students per year, which in the year 2002-03 was increased to 100. It is a matter of pride that one of the institutions Senior Professor, Dr.Vijaylaxmi B M was the first student in the whole state to complete BHMS degree course and she later joined the service of the institution. The institution got affiliated to Gulbarga University, Gulbarga, in the year 1996, since the Rajiv Ganchi University of Health Science, Karnataka, came into existence; the institution is affiliated to it. Since its inception, the institution is recognized by the Central Council of Homoeopathy, New Delhi. More than 700 graduates have passed through the hallowed portals of this institution since its inception. Most of them are very well-settled in their professional practice and many of them have excelled in academic and administrative fields too. The alumni of this institution have joined even the alumni are in politics too, with a few entering the Legislative assembles. The institution is also the first in the state to offer Post Graduate courses in Homoeopathy, since the year 1995. It offers these courses in three specialties. The initial intake capacity was only three per specialty, which was later enhanced to six, since the year 2001.
In order to strengthen the teaching faculty the society has recruited 31 teachers since its inception, marking the teaching faculty pattern the most ideal one as per the guidelines of the Council. To improve the teaching skills of the faculty, the institution undertakes continuous efforts. The faculty of the institution are encouraged to enhance their teaching skills by participating in programmes like, Training of Trainers (T.O.T.) programme of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Karnataka, which was organized in this institution in the month of March 2003, August 2003 and later in September 2004. The members of the faculty have been at the forefront of administration at the University and other bodies. The Ex Principal, Dr.S.S.Shetty was the member of the first Senate of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, which was organized in this institution in the month of March 2003, August 2003 and later in September 2004. The present Principal, Dr. P.Sampath Rao, is the Dean Faculty of Homoeopathy and also Member of Central Council of Homoeopathy, nominated by the University. He is also a former Member of the Senate.
The Hospital attached to this institution was started with a bed capacity of 50 and is now enhanced to 75. The hospital has separate wards for Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, etc. It equipped with facilities like X-ray, auto analyzer, E.C.G., etc. Presently, it is headed by Medical Superintendent Dr.(Mrs.) Rajeshwari K. The OPDs of the hospital are spread all over the Gulbarga city to provide effective Medical care at the doorsteps of the citizens. The Oldest among them is at Gazipur area, which is the busiest one catering to at least 100 patients per day. The other OPDs are at Sangameshwar Hospital, Nehru Gunj and Mayamandir. In the year 1999, the Government f Karnataka in collaboration with this institution started a 25 bedded Joint Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic Hospital. The Hospital has adopted six villages Pattan, Saradgi, Khanadal, Farhatabad, Mahagaon and Nandikur to provide effective and cheap Medical care to the rural masses by opening peripheral OPDs. The hospital has specialized care to offer to the old citizens through Geriatric Care Centre, started in association with Rotary Club. The Hospital trains its young Graduates and students at all these facilities equipping them with confidence to serve the society at the best.
Thus the journey of this institution during the past 25 years has been exciting and exhilarating passing through many milestones and leaving many foot prints for others to follow. The institution has created an aura around itself for its quality and commitment to excel, though it had its own share f ups and down as it happens with anything that grows. The institution looks forward to set newer goals for itself and trying hard to achieve them, with every passing year.
